From basin to stop
In the Inner Aegean, stone takes different forms: a carved tomb entrance at Göynüş Valley, rock-cut dwellings at Ayazini, and water-shaped canyons in Uşak. Read the region through these distinct uses rather than as one continuous past.
A tomb doorway and a rock settlement
At Göynüş Valley, lions and cubs frame the carved entrance to Aslantaş, with a tree-of-life relief above it. The idea that it was a king’s tomb, and its proposed seventh-century BCE date, remain uncertain. In Ayazini, tuff-cut homes, tombs and churches reflect settlement across Phrygian, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman periods.
From travertine to canyon
Calcite-rich water builds Pamukkale’s travertine terraces. The Kula-Salihli UNESCO Global Geopark brings together the Kula volcanic field, Gediz Graben and Bozdağ Mountains. In Uşak, Ulubey Canyon and Taşyaran show different water-shaped landscapes. Together, they make visible the region’s varied geological processes.
Two plants on a Synnada coin
One Synnada bronze coin, dated after 133 BCE, shows poppy and wheat between the caps of the Dioscuri on its reverse. The plant images are coin motifs: a small, specific trace from the city's material culture.
Painted rugs and a named type
In Uşak, rugs shown in paintings by Hans Holbein and Lorenzo Lotto belong to a different context from the 16th-century medallion Uşak carpet as a named type. One appears as a painted image; the other is a textile category. They open separate ways to read carpets without becoming one continuous design story.
