Kocatepe

A 1,874-metre hill over the plains

Kocatepe stands at 1,874 metres within Büyük Kalecik in central Afyonkarahisar, commanding the Afyonkarahisar and Sinanpaşa plains. This field of view makes it more than a statue location: it is part of a command topography in which 1922 decisions related to terrain, visibility, route and time.

Command post and surviving trench

The Culture Portal reports that Mustafa Kemal and companions arrived at Kocatepe on the evening of 25 August 1922 and that the Great Offensive began here on the morning of 26 August. It states that the first phase was directed from a command post on the hill and a trench still present today, before departure around midday on 27 August. Inscription, monument and Victory Week

A cut-stone monument and marble inscription were made in 1953, followed by the Atatürk Monument and landscape work that opened the site to visitors in 1993. According to the official record, Victory Week of 26-30 August begins with the first ceremony at Kocatepe. The monument's purpose is not to close history but to keep the relationship among geography, archive, ceremony and public discussion alive.
