The reuse of a 180-year-old building

The Culture Portal reports that Dokur Evi was restored by retaining original materials and replacing building elements that had lost their character. In 2010 it reopened as the Uşak Municipality Dokur Evi Traditional Handicrafts Carpet-Making Centre; the value of the house lies in the continuity of architecture and use together.

Outer sofa, main room and lived house

The official account describes the building as an Uşak house with the character of a typical Turkish house and an outer sofa. The open-sided sofa used in summer, the main room for guests and rooms for family life give the spatial frame of domestic life before the carpet-making centre.

A forty-loom space for learning and making

Dokur Evi is reported to hold 40 carpet looms and to host courses run with Uşak Municipality, the Turkish Employment Agency and the Public Education Centre. It is therefore not simply a past on display but a working space where education, skill transmission and production meet under one roof.

The living trace of the Uşak carpet

The Culture Portal stresses that carpets are made through women's labour and that the centre aims to contribute to women's employment. The same institution's Uşak carpet page identifies the area as an early Ottoman carpet-making centre and notes examples in various museums. This page will not treat current operating status as certain without a newly dated institutional announcement.

Reading carpet from house to world

Dokur Evi brings the museum history of the Uşak carpet together with local memory of house, loom and learning. When the inventory arrives, building sections, looms, course memory and sample patterns will be linked carefully with source, permission and visibility notes.
