Northern Aegean: Mound and coastal city
The nine cultural layers at [Troy](/en/yer/troya) reach back to early occupation around 3000 BCE. That archaeological sequence does not prove that events in Homer’s epic happened at the mound. At [Assos](/en/yer/assos), a volcanic height above the coast holds a different civic pattern: the Athena temple, agora, gymnasium, theatre and necropolis. The contrast is between layered settlement and a coastal city, not one continuous chronology.
