A threshold made by three harbours
Kyzikos flourished on the strategic isthmus where Kapıdağ joins the mainland. Endowed with three sheltered natural harbours, Kyzikos controlled vital maritime routes between the Black Sea and the Aegean, commanding the crossways toward Mysia and Troy.
The Temple of Hadrian and amphitheatre
Once celebrated as an eighth wonder of the ancient world, the Temple of Hadrian featured immense Corinthian capitals and monumental vaulted substructures. Straddling a rushing stream between two hills, its extraordinary amphitheatre could even be flooded for mock naval battles.
Coastal fortunes reshaped by seismic shock
Resting atop volatile fault lines, Kyzikos suffered catastrophic earthquakes in the mid-sixth century CE. As harbours silted and inhabitants migrated to nearby Erdek and Bandırma, the city faded, yet masterworks of its renowned sculptors live on in the Bandırma Archaeology Museum.

Kyzikos lies within Erdek where Kapıdağ joins the mainland. Its three harbours are named alongside walls, agora, theatre, bouleuterion, metroon, necropolis, amphitheatre and the Temple of Hadrian; this range requires the city to be read beyond a single monument.
How do the layers change?
The official record begins the city's historical periods in the mid-8th century BCE. Earthquakes transformed a settlement that gained strategic and commercial importance; after the mid-6th-century CE shock, much of the population migrated and the city lost its former standing.
How was the place inhabited?
Harbours represent movement and exchange; agora and bouleuterion public decision-making; theatre and amphitheatre collective spectacle; and the necropolis a separate funerary world. Coins and other finds at Bandırma Museum preserve portable records of this extensive urban landscape.
