33,500 hectares at the straits' threshold

The Gallipoli Historical Area is a landscape of about 33,500 hectares at the peninsula's southern tip. Official design guidance describes it not only as a First World War battlefield but also as a route of settlement and passage from antiquity to the nineteenth century. This scale requires reading topography, village and natural environment together, beyond a photograph of one monument.

Trench, headquarters, hospital and loss

The Historical Area's related elements include trench lines, headquarters, forts, batteries, landing grounds, cemeteries, burial grounds, ceremonial areas and hospitals. A shared responsibility across communities

Official guidance defines the Historical Area as a heritage place connecting different cultures and communities with their past and carrying social memory to future generations. Caring for physical and intangible heritage together

The area became a national park in 1973, and its management structure was reorganised in 2014 through the Historical Area Directorate. Alongside restoration and landscape works at cemeteries, forts, headquarters, trenches and museums, the Directorate is pursuing training and projects to inventory intangible cultural heritage. This dossier will add new interventions and visitor information only from published institutional announcements.
