Beçin

A plateau above the plain

Beçin stands on a flat plateau overlooking the Milas Plain. The position makes the castle more than a viewpoint: plain production, control of routes and the settlement pattern within and outside the walls belong to one topographic decision.

Capital of the Menteşe Beylik

According to the Culture Portal, Beçin came under the Menteşe Beylik in the late thirteenth century and was its capital for a period, flourishing under Ahmet Gazi. Remains of madrasa, bath, mosque, caravanserai, lodge and tomb show how being a political centre shaped city life.

Inside, outside and older traces

Although much visible fabric belongs to the Menteşe period, the site also has Chalcolithic, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman finds. Rather than fixing Beçin as only a 'beylik city', it should be read through changing settlement scale and use across periods.

Abandoned, but not a closed dossier

The city largely lost population after the sixteenth century, and settlement ended when the last families left the castle after the 1950s. This does not mean the story ended: conservation, research, documentation and its relation to Milas form its present layer.

Reading the medieval city as a network

Beçin entered UNESCO's Tentative List in 2012. Inventory work will make building types, the relation of inner castle, walls and outer settlement, and connections across the Milas Plain visible in one historical network.
