Pergamon, Halicarnassus, Miletus: paths of knowledge

It would be misleading to lock Miletus, Halicarnassus and Pergamon into one fixed ‘route of geniuses’. Thales, Herodotus and Galen belonged to different centuries; this guide has no evidence for a direct school or a single contemporary network among the three cities. Instead, it reads them side by side as traces left at different times by inquiry into nature, memory and healing in the Aegean.

Miletus lies around Balat, where the Büyük Menderes reaches the sea, and is visible through its harbour history, changing coast and long settlement sequence. Türkiye’s Culture Portal places the local intellectual tradition alongside Anaximenes, Anaximander, Hecataeus and Thales; ancient biographical tradition itself preserves competing accounts of Thales’s origins and life. Miletus is therefore read here not as a certain birthplace of one person, but together with the contested sources of intellectual history.

Halicarnassus is the Carian harbour city developed beneath and within modern Bodrum. Local and museum sources associate Herodotus with Halicarnassus, while the opening of the *Histories* identifies the author as ‘Herodotus of Halicarnassus’. Pergamon opens a different landscape of knowledge and healing through its Hellenistic acropolis, Roman Asclepieion and continued settlement layers. UNESCO notes that Galen was trained in Pergamon; the guide does not turn this into a claim about a particular birthplace building or training detail.

This is not an itinerary that gathers three contemporaries. It moves among three dossiers along the Menderes delta, the Carian coast and the Bakırçay plain, following only what the sources support and keeping uncertainty visible.
