Kaunos

Kaunos on the Dalyan River, carrying rock tombs and an inland harbour in one landscape.

Muğla · River and harbour city

From a closable harbour to an inland coast

Kaunos lies on the west bank of the Dalyan River, which joins Lake Köyceğiz to the Mediterranean. The official source relays Strabo's description of a closable harbour and shipyards, and notes that Kaunos, like many coastal settlements, now lies inland. Harbour silting explains the city's transformation through water.

A city changing hands at the Caria-Lycia threshold

The official account traces layers of rule from Persian power to Mausolos, and after 334 BCE to Princess Ada, Antigonos and Ptolemy, followed by Rhodes, Pergamon and Rome. The sequence requires us to read rock tombs with changing politics and harbour economy, not alone.

Facades carved into rock

The first features noticed on arrival are the rock tombs; the facades of large examples recall Ionic temples in antis. The unfinished easternmost tomb, showing a stage of construction, lets us read the architecture as process as well as result.

River, archaeological site and tentative list

Kaunos has been on UNESCO's Tentative List since 2014. The Culture Portal's current record was updated in 2026; this page will grow environmental and conservation information through dated institutional publications such as these, rather than rumour.

Caring for the river landscape together

At Kaunos, acropolis, theatre, walls, former harbour, rock tombs and the Dalyan River are parts of one place narrative. When the inventory arrives, they will appear not as isolated markers but as linked records explaining water and topography together.

Four sourced layers from the research library

How is the place situated?

The official source places Kaunos on the western bank of the Dalyan River, which connects Lake Köyceğiz to the Mediterranean, within the boundaries of Çandır. The rock tombs, acropolis, theatre and former harbour around Sülüklü Lake are connected but need separate map nodes.

How do the layers change?

Known in an ancient account for a closable harbour and shipyards, Kaunos now stands inland from the coast. The theatre, baths, temples, basilica and stoa carry different functions and periods; the city cannot be reduced to one building phase.

How was the place inhabited?

The harbour, shipyards, stoa and civic buildings indicate settings for movement, production, assembly and representation. The large Ionic temple-facade rock tombs make elite funerary architecture visible, while the source does not identify every tomb owner or quantify harbour capacity by period.

What can be said today?

Kaunos has been on UNESCO's Tentative List since 2014. That status is a conservation and interpretation context, not current visitor information; boat or road access, tickets, hours and excavation-area conditions must be checked through dated official sources.
