Birgi

From antiquity to a foothill settlement

The official record presents Birgi's past through Phrygian, Lydian, Persian, Pergamene and Roman periods. Its Byzantine names, Pyrigion and later Christoupolis, show that the settlement did not begin with its present traditional houses. This dossier follows the different scales each era left in later fabric without reducing old phases to one visual style.

The urban centre of the Aydınoğulları

Birgi served as capital of the Aydınoğlu Beylik in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and came definitively under Ottoman rule in 1426. The change should be read not as 'one period ended and another began' but as the ongoing reorganisation of governance, endowed structures, neighbourhoods and productive surroundings.

Bay window, woodwork and public building

Birgi's bay-windowed houses, mansions, mosques, tombs, baths, madrasas, fountains and complexes together create the image of a museum town. The wood-decorated mihrab and minbar of the Grand Mosque and the woodworking of Çakırağa Mansion let us read architecture not only as façade but as a lived setting where craft, worship, dwelling and neighbourhood life intertwine.

A living fabric under care

At Birgi, natural, archaeological and urban sites are protected together. The historic town has been on UNESCO's Tentative List since 2012, and the official record also notes its 2022 recognition as a UNWTO Best Tourism Village. The page will update new care and access information through dated authoritative publication without presenting homes and neighbourhood life as tourist scenery.

Bringing the scale of dwelling into the inventory

At Birgi, the inventory must hold not only large structures but the relationship among street, mansion, fountain, courtyard, craft detail and their present use. Every record will show its source and care note alongside period and function, explaining how it connects to a fabric that continues to be lived in.
