From Lycus to the Büyük Menderes: Laodicea, Hierapolis and Tripolis

It would be inaccurate to present Laodicea, Hierapolis-Pamukkale and Tripolis as stops from one single period or as a continuous visitor line that can be followed today. Official records do, however, support reading settlements around the Lycus/Çürüksu Valley and the Büyük Menderes at different scales. Laodicea appears in the Lycus Valley at the meeting context of Phrygia, Lydia and Caria, while Hierapolis-Pamukkale brings a travertine landscape created by thermal waters together with an ancient settlement in one protected setting. The official Tripolis record says routes from Smyrna, Pergamon and Ephesus met at Tripolis before continuing through Hierapolis and Laodicea toward eastern and southern Anatolia. This is not a claim of a present-day driving or walking route, continuing access, or that every structure belongs to one period; it compares valley, thermal landscape and a riverside crossroads within the historical geography described by the sources.
