The ancient city of Myus was one of the 12 original Ionian League cities and remains the most dramatic example of a harbor city completely abandoned due to environmental catastrophe and mosquito infestation. In the 3rd century BCE, after alluvial deposits from the Maeander River cut off its bay and created stagnant lakes, swarms of mosquitoes forced the citizens to evacuate to Miletus.
